Salary: €38,000 – €42,000 depending on experience and qualifications 

O’Donnell Environmental is an independent ecological and environmental consultancy based in Cork City. We are scaling and growing by providing a high-quality service to a wide range of Clients in both the public and private sectors. We have a strong forward workload which is primarily related to onshore renewable energy and also includes commercial, transport and residential projects. We also carry out conservation focused (non-planning-related) work, including the design and implementation of Biodiversity Action Plans, Pollinator Plans, Farm Plans etc.

As our business continues to grow, we wish to recruit an Ecologist with approximately two years’ professional experience. We are seeking someone who is ambitious and forward thinking and who wants exposure to interesting and exciting projects. The ideal candidate must enjoy fieldwork, as a significant part of your working week will be spent surveying on-site or overseeing our ongoing conservation projects throughout Ireland (and occasionally UK).

We normally work on a four-day week basis, Monday to Thursday.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a busy and fast-paced consultancy to deliver project requirements on time and budget.
  • Design, manage and deliver ecological surveys safely and to a high standard.
  • Analyse and interpret data, and prepare reports to a high standard for EcIA, EIAR, AA and other projects.
  • Liaise with Clients and other Stakeholders in a professional, proactive and positive manner.

Key Requirements

  • Degree in ecology or relevant environmental discipline with approximately two years professional post-graduate experience in ecology.
  • Membership of CIEEM with a professional approach and passion for ecology and biodiversity.
  • Strong, demonstratable field skills in at least one ecological discipline (e.g. botany or ornithology).
  • Good working knowledge of key Irish and European planning and environmental legislation and current best practice survey standards.
  • Experience of report writing to a high standard and some experience in project management and Client liaison.
  • Enthusiasm for working outdoors in all conditions and at night (e.g. bat surveys).
  • Proficient in GIS (QGIS).
  • Full, clean driver’s license (company-owned ‘pool cars’ provided for work related travel).
  • Attention to detail and ability to work well unsupervised.
  • Must enjoy autonomy and be a self-starter with integrity, who can think on their feet.
